Picture this, it’s Saturday April the 9th and you’ve got together with a friend or two and have entered 

the SA Rogaining Association’s Velogaine  - SA’s premier cycle navigation event. Currently you’re 

poring over a map working out how you will traverse the back roads and tracks of the Kapunda 

region in search of coveted Velogaine control points. Soon you’ll be cycling through some of SA’s 

most attractive countryside either hell bent on a big score or at a more leisurely pace so you can 

enjoy the views and the experience of being in the country. It’s a unique test of athletic and mental 

prowess or a pleasant ride – it’s up to you. After either 2 or 4 hours (also your choice) you’ll return to 

the Wheatsheaf Hotel at Allendale North and settle in for a counter lunch, some refreshments and 

après ride tall talk and performance excuse making. What could be better? Here are the details – see

SARA Velogaine

Cost: $20 (counter meals optional and extra – see entry for details)

Location: Start and finish is at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Allendale North

Teams: 2 to 5 riders per team

Registration from 8.30

Maps from 9.00

4 hour starts at 10.00

2 hour starts at 12.00

Finish at 2.00

Equipment: Required

 Bicycle in good working order with 2 effective brakes (Mountain bike, cyclocross bike or 

similar)

 Helmet

 Appropriate clothing

 Water

Recommended

 Food

 Tools and spares

 Map board – There are a limited number of boards for loan but any sort of board mounted 

on the handlebars where the map can be held when you are riding makes for far more 

efficient navigation.
